Face Shape – Accessories

In last month’s post Face Shape we introduced the different types of face shape and how to figure out which you had. As I was browsing through Self magazine April edition in a feature about tips for your hair, included was some hair accessories and how to wear them. How perfect that they broke it down by face shape. Unfortunately I couldn’t find an online version of the feature but here it is broken down.

For a Long Face – styling goal: to create width in your face. Suggested accessory: a skinny headband. (wear it in the center of your head)

For a Heart shaped face – styling goal: to balance out a more prominent chin. Suggested accessory: a feminine floral bobby pin or barrette. (wear it just above and behind your ear)

For an Oval face – styling goal: Lucky, this shape goes with any style. Suggested accessory: a festive comb or clip. (wear it with your hair pulled back and as if it’s coming our of your hair)

For a round face – styling goal: create the illusion of length by adding more volume to your crown. Suggested accessory: a wide, teeth-free headband (wear it by sliding headband from your hairline to the center of your head; hair can be up or down)

So, go out and have some fun with hair accessories. The best part is, this accessory can be pretty cheap so it’s an easy way to update your look as well. Check out the full scoop in this month’s Self Magazine on page 51.

Eating Your Way to Better Skin

We all know the old saying “you are what you eat.” So the same goes for wanting healthy skin. Put healthy foods in and, along with a dialed skin care regime, you will have healthy looking, fantastic skin. The article “Foods For Healthy Skin” was very thorough, yet concise on what the best choices are to achieve healthy skin through what you eat.

For your convenience I have broken out the gist of what types foods are suggested. I’m including some tips and my favorites too.

Low-fat dairy products

a low fat spreadable swiss cheese – The Laughing Cow has great cheese that comes in many different flavors.

low fat yogurt – vanilla Wallabey Yogurt is so creamy and delicious it almost feels like a treat

Milk – we are often told skim, but really the caloric difference for 1% is not so much and it tastes a lot less like milk flavored water. I like to add some chocolate flavored, 100% whey protein to an 8oz. glass in the morning.

Blackberries, blueberries, strawberries and plums

When out of season, go for the frozen variety. Since they are frozen at the peak of  freshness frozen berries are optimal in nutrients.

Salmon, walnuts, canola oil, flax seed

Flax seeds can be added to anything from spaghetti sauce to oatmeal.

If you don’t like the taste of walnuts, grind some up and add them to almost anything without really tasting them.

Healthy oils (in moderation)

“cold pressed, expeller processed, or extra virgin are the ones to look for.”

Whole wheat breads, muffins and cereals; turkey, tuna and brazil nuts

Granny’s Delight 100% whole wheat – found at Harmon’s, this bread packs in 6g fiber, 3g protein and only 80 calories per slice. It is made in Kaysville, UT as well – so for the Utahns reading this – it is local! When purchasing whole        wheat bread make sure that that is the first ingredient and look for  5+ grams of fiber per slice.

Green Tea

Any suggestions on brands would be appreciated – I have only tried Stash.

Water

At least half of your body weight in ounces. So if you weigh 130 lbs, you should drink 65oz. The article points out the exact amount you should drink varies, I got this amount from a chiropractor who specializes in wellness.

Here are some examples of how to combine more than two of the above categories:

  • Yogurt with blueberries and a tablespoon of walnuts, and maybe even a tablespoon of flax seeds.
  • Whole wheat bread with spreadable low-fat swiss cheese and tuna
  • Salmon cooked in extra-virgin olive oil
  • Sliced strawberries and blackberries with half a whole wheat muffin

So those are just a few examples, the combinations can be as creative as you are.

Lips as red as the rose. . .

By Leta Greene

I like dark red lips.  After all, I had huge lip stickers on my last car. My husband objected to driving around with lips–can’t figure out why.  What could be sexier than luscious red lips? OK, I can see that not everyone may want to be quite as loud as myself when choosing lip color, but having the right lip color for you will brighten your face.  Many women, out of frustration from either the fear of picking the wrong color or distress at leaving our lip mark, pick a very light shade.  Great thing about our lip color is that it won’t kiss-off. So the send off of your loved ones won’t leave a mark.  On the second point, I am here to help pick the right color for both your complexion and personality.  Lip color can make us look younger and more cheerful and brightens the face when wearing complementary eye make up.  General rule: the darker the lips, the darker the eye makeup.  The goal is to focus the viewer’s eye in a triangle between the lips and the eyes.  You loose the lips by wearing a light color and with darker eye makeup, can produce a scowling, menacing look–not so sultry.  When trying something new, even an improvement can take some getting used to, get the opinions of hubby and friends. And so, ladies, be bold—be brave, try a darker shade and pucker up!
